School Social Worker

In Rochester, as well as across the state, and across the country, school social workers provide a link between school, home, and the community. Our job is to promote student academic success by reducing social, emotional, economic, and environmental barriers to learning. We do this through a variety of ways, including:

  • Working with students one-on-one, in small groups, or in the classroom to develop problem-solving, conflict resolution and decision-making skills, deal with difficult or crisis situations (divorce, death in the family, move to a new school), and work to improve interpersonal relationships with their peers
  • Connecting students and families to school- and community-based resources (health, mental health, housing, food/nutrition)
  • Addressing barriers to school attendance
